Fresh Catches Make Every Meal a Seafood Lover’s Delight
Fresh fish is the order of the day on Isla Mujeres. The island offers a number of specialty seafood restaurants, as well as niche restaurants with seafood offerings. One of the most popular restaurants on the island is Sunset Grill, a charming outdoor eatery located right on the beach. They offer breakfast, lunch and dinner, and accept all major credit cards. Among their specialties are fish seared in a light ‘achiote’ sauce, traditional fried fish and chips, and a variety of steak entrees. Reservations are recommended for dinner; main courses range from $15 to $25.
A well-known dining establishment among local families, Playa Lancheros is nestled in the middle of the island on the bayside. Many of their seafood dishes are grilled in an open fire, and visitors can sit under the palm trees or wade on the beach while waiting for their meal. One of the restaurant’s specialties is pescado Xichin Xic, a fresh grilled fish seasoned with local spices.
Another restaurant popular with locals is Cockteleria Picus, located on the beach next to the ferry docks downtown. This small eatery is a great destination for daily selections of fresh-caught seafood. Cockteleria Picus offers a wide variety of ceviche, including shrimp, white fish, conch, and even octopus. They can also prepare cocktails with any of their fresh fish. In the evenings, local musicians perform traditional Mexican songs.
Also downtown is the Cockteleria Miramar, a comfortable, family-style fish house. If you step off the ferry, this restaurant is facing the street, on your left. They’re famous for their fish tacos and the jumbo-sized mango shake, which is large enough for two people to share. Cockteleria Miramar serves breakfast, lunch and dinner.
One of the island’s most interesting restaurants is the Cockteleria Justicia Social, which is owned and operated by the island’s fishermen’s’ cooperative. The restaurant is located on Avenue Medina, near the ferry dock. They offer lobster, fresh cerviche, shrimp, grilled fillet, and seafood cocktails. Diners can relax with a cold beer and watch the fishing boats arrive and unload their catch.
Brisas del Caribe is another popular restaurant on Avenue Medina, featuring seafood as well as Mexican and American cuisine. On Avenue Hidalgo, you’ll find El Sombrero de Gomar, a traditional Mexican restaurant with a lively atmosphere, great service, and fresh grilled seafood. Just around the corner is El Varadero de Oscar, which overlooks Laguna Makax. Here, you can get delicious steak in addition to grilled seafood.
Manolo’s is a real treat. A restaurant in the ‘Palapa’ style, it’s located on Avenue Juarez and specializes in seafood and traditional Mexican cuisine. They are open for dinner only. Pinguino’s is located in the Posada del Mar Hotel and boasts a substantial menu of great Mexican dishes and fresh seafood. The restaurant is on the balcony and overlooks the sidewalk in front of the beach, so it’s a great place to relax and watch the world go by.
Finally, you must stop by Lo Lo Lorena’s and Velasquez, two must-see restaurants offering fresh seafood and menus that vary based on what the owner or chef has found at the market.
